Fishing village in Sunderbans
Before leaving the Sunderbans we stopped at a village on an island which was mainly a fishing village. We were greeted and the locals came quickly to "be our friends". Many children came and wanted to hold hands, ask our names, touch our clothes and of course ask for money. We walked with them for a long time up and down the village. Hot in the summer with little protection and I can only imagine the struggle our there during the monsoon rains. Everyone walking barefoot and always doing something useful. Bengali people just do not seem to sit down for one moment to take it easy. They work and work and work. Instead of giving money we bought all the cildren ice-cream. It started with 20 ice creams but while we were at the ice-cream cart more and more children came and we ended up buying I think 40 of them. Then they walked us back to wave us all off.
